Book Beginnings: March 4, 2011

This meme is hosted by Katy at A Few More Pages
How to participate: Share the first line (or two) of the book you are currently reading. Include the title and the author so we know what you're reading. Then, if you feel so moved, let us know what your first impressions were based on that first line, and let us know if you liked or did not like the sentence. The link-up will be here at A Few More Pages every Friday.

I am just about to begin Fasting, Feasting by Anita Desai, which was recommended on a number of blogs

"On the veranda overlooking the garden, the drive and the gate, they sit together on the creaking sofa-swing, suspended from its iron frame, dangling their legs so that the slippers on their feet hang loose."

Who are these two people? Where are they living? I get the feeling that they are a bit nervous, so why is that? I am ready to begin....

Verandas always make me think of slower, easier times. Great image.

Tea--Great image!

Laurel-Rain--I'm on my way to check out your post

Bev--You are so right, a veranda always sets a scene of a certain kind and I am looking forward to it

Mostraum--The opening scene is so serene and well described without over-doing it

Kathy--Almost 24 hours later and I am only about 10 pages in. I hope today I'll have a chunk of reading time!
