Sunday Salon: Dewey Read-a-Thon Wrap up

Dewey 23-Hour Read-a-Thon Update:
Time spent on the read-a-thon:
My morning was devoted to regular life so my reading didn't kick in until almost 2:00 Pacific Time (that's hour 10)! I read until 10:00pm so got in about 6 hours of reading since I took a dinner break and a dog-walking break.

Books read:
  • Hummingbirds by Joshua Gaylord
  • Shakespeare Bats Cleanup by Ron Koertge
  • The Eternal Smile by Gene Luen Yang and Derek Kirk Kim
  • I am part way into Plastic by Harvey (it's an Orca Soundings book from the "Easier" reading collection in my school's library)
Other activities:
I participated in a few mini-challenges
I visited a few blogs to cheer people on

Thoughts:
I love the read-a-thon even though I never make it through the night (that's just not going to happen), I never read as much as I hope or think I will, and life always gets in the way. However, I love the feeling of belonging to the larger group, that there are people around the world participating in the same event as me at the same time. We will probably never meet, but we "know" one another through this shared experience of the read-a-thon and the shared love of books and reading.

LOL I don't know that I'll ever make those wee hours, either!

Making it through the night is never going to happen for me either. It's easier to just embrace that fact!

I forced myself to make it through the night the first time I participated and I felt horrible! Second time, I just took a 3-hour nap in the middle of the night and felt a little better about that. The 3rd and 4th, I just went to bed when I got tired and said that was fine. :D

You did great Helen!!

The play was a great success, but the audience was a disaster.

Congratulations on your success in this year's Readathon!

Cambele, Stephanie, Amanda--I am all about getting enough sleep every night. So, even for reading I won't sacrifice my sleep

I know all about life getting in the way. As another blogger told me, ANY reading is good reading so we all win.

I find that no matter how much or how little reading I get in, it is all very satisfying! I do love the group aspect of it. It's wonderful that so many people who love to read can take a day and celebrate!

Wombat--the quote sounds like something a teacher would say: the lesson was a great success, but the students were another matter

SenoraG--Great point and I like that you're keeping positive: any reading is good reading!

Shelley--The feeling of community is one of my favorite parts of the read-a-thon

I'm beginning to think that the lesser time you spend reading, the more productive you are. 9 hours didn't help me accomplish much at all. That's probably a big takeaway for me. Congrats on some great reading even with 6 hours!

Aths--I agree. Less time to read means we end up being more efficient since we don't want to waste any of the limited time we have!
