Dewey Read-a-Thon: let's get started

Hour 1 (well, it's actually hour 2, but I let myself sleep in a bit since I am on Pacific time...) so here's my introduction:

Where are you reading from today?
I'll be reading in my living room. It's sunny with lots of windows and natural light.

3 facts about me …

  • I am a teacher librarian at a public high school in Santa Barbara
  • I am nearing my one year anniversary for my blog
  • I love York Peppermint Patties (they are the only dessert I'll let myself eat these days)

How many books do you have in your TBR pile for the next 24 hours?
Only 5, some of which are quite thin. But if I get through those, I can add more (no surprise, right?)

Do you have any goals for the read-a-thon (i.e. number of books, number of pages, number of hours, or number of comments on blogs)?

I've got one "required" book and 4 thin YA books to keep me busy today. My morning doesn't look good for reading, but after 1:00 I am pretty good to go!
Hummingbirds by Joshua Gaylord for the TLC tour (I am posting on Tuesday)
Shakespeare Bats Cleanup by Ron Koertge
The Tequila Worm by Viola Canales
Plastic by Sarah N. Harvey
The Eternal Smile by Gene Luen Yang and Derek Kirk Kim

Actually, I am really looking forward to some concentrated reading time since I have had virtually none since school started in late August.

If you’re a veteran read-a-thoner, any advice for people doing this for the first time?
This is my third Dewey Read-a-Thon and my advice is to remember to get up and walk around. Take breaks. Change your reading position. And, don't each too much junk!

(Non)traditional Buddhist readathon blessing:

Just as the books fill the shelves,
Pile together on the floor and stack up on the table
So may the joy of the readathon
Flow forth to brighten your day and lift your spirit.
Books already read, books in progress and books yet to be read.

By the power of every word on the page
May your book be delightful,
As scary as Lovecraft’s Cthulhu
Or as sweet as a box of See’s candy.

Let the power of the images evoked by words
Keep you stay awake long through the night
May no obstacle impede
Your day filled with books.

For all of those who are reading today
Who follow in the path of Dewey
May your day be filled with the four blessings
Of fabulous books, tasty snacks, comfy chairs and joy.

Amanda--The big challenge today is not to eat too many Yorks while reading!

Jill--Thank you! What would a read-a-thon be without the blessing

Amused--Thank you! You too
