Sunday Salon: February 14, 2021

Deb Nance at Readerbuzz runs The Sunday Salon.

Well, my daughter has gone back to snowy NY, and has had 2 negative COVID tests in the past week (her school is being very thorough, but she said the cases are rising, which is really different from in the Fall). This means our house is quieter and feels emptier.

Since she left, I've been working tons (one day was 8am to 8pm zoom meetings. I do not recommend this!). But, this is a four-day weekend for me so I am using it to clean house, read, catch up on errands, and get stuff done for a Board of which I am president.

My brother sent us a game, Rummikub, so my mom and I are testing it out. It's like playing Rummy 500, but with tiles and I like it. I haven't played a game in a while so it's been fun.

My parents got their second vaccine and have been out for the count with low fevers, body aches, and huge fatigue for the past 24 hours. They got Moderna and apparently the second shot packs a wallop.

CYBILS winners were announced this morning and I was really excited to see which books were chosen in each category. And now I can finally talk about the choices we made in the YA fiction and speculative fiction category; I am happy with our choices (though I'll say I was torn about which books to put as number 1) and my group of round 2 judges was great. I will start to post my reviews of the finalists this afternoon.

In my categories, here are the winners:

  • YA Fiction: Furia by Yamile Saied Méndez
  • YA Speculative Fiction: Cemetery Boys by Aiden Thomas
