Summary (from the inside flap of the book): Virgil Salinas is shy and misunderstood. Valencia Somerset is clever and stubborn. Kaori Tanaka reads fortunes and reads the stars. Chet "the Bull" Bullens is the biggest bully in the neighborhood.

They aren't friends. They don't all go to the same school. But when Chet pulls an unthinkable prank on Virgil and Virgil's pet guinea pig, Gulliver, the lives of these four middle schoolers collide in surprising and unexpected ways.

Just a coincidence? Or are some things just meant to be?
Review: The librarian at one of our local high schools handed me this book when I told her I am reading the ALA award winners. I thought it was a totally different book and hadn't intended to read the Newbery Award Winner. But, I am glad I did as this is a delightful book, just what I needed this week.

I like the characters in this book. Virgil is so shy I wanted things to be okay for him, Kaori s quirky and interesting and I can tell will be just fine in life. Valencia is strong as well as smart and caring. I like that. Chet is a bully, but plays an important and interesting role. I'll admit there is a little bit of magical realism, which I am not really into, but I was okay with it as it seemed to help the main character through a tough time.

The story is a sweet one, but I think middle schoolers would really like this one.

Challenges for which this counts:
