Sunday Salon: So maybe I won't lose my job after all...

Family and Life:
What did this past week hold for me? Finally reading the book my brother wrote, seeing my dog climb a tree, going to (another) School Board meeting, listening to David Obst (writer of Fast Times at Ridgemont High) for 45 minutes on the phone while he told me of his four ideas for education, sending my dad off to Venezuela for a birding trip, and dealing with County Flood Control breaking our water pipe then telling us it's our private water line so it's not their problem we have no water.

Work:
Our School Board voted to have 10 furlough days for all employees in order to solve the need for $10 in cuts. Now the unions have to negotiate it and we will all vote in early April. The Board says if we all vote yes they won't cut any programs or jobs. For teachers, that means losing 5 pupil-free in-service days and 5 days of teaching days. However, each remaining teaching day will be 15 minutes longer to make up for the lost days. Our district is also in the process of unification with our elementary district. If that goes through we get $6.5 million and that would buy back about 5 furlough days. So, things are still in limbo, but they are looking much better than a week ago!

Books and Reading:
I got in a bunch of new books at school, which only adds to my TBR list! I think I need to be able to read for about 100 days straight without sleep so I can catch up on this ever-growing list. I get so excited about new books that come into my sphere that I read them and then don't read stuff I've had hanging around for a long time. Oh well, summer vacation is only a few months away. Maybe I can control myself until then....

Good news about your job! I hope it all works out!

I didn't know dogs climbed trees! Some of my cats climb trees...but one of them got up and couldn't get down by herself, so it's not just your poodle who has that problem!

How great that your brother wrote a book, I hope you liked it!

I hope you have a relaxong Sunday and can read one or two of those many books you have!
Enjoy!

I'm just glad that things don't look too bad now. Phew! Also, just saw that you are reading the Anne Frank graphic book! Can't wait to hear your thoughts!

Amy-- I've managed to get through two books (both very short) so that feels good

Aths--Anne Frank is the next one I am going to read. I figure I can finish it today

I was thinking about you -- we're facing draconian cuts from the governor at our university as well. How crazy to cut long term necessities for short term gains. I'm glad your district seems to be more progressive than many!

What a week! I can't believe the county broke your water pipe and then declared that it's your problem! I hope it gets fixed soon!

I'm glad it looks like you'll still have a job next year. My sister in law is a fairly new teacher (she's been there a few years) and every year they worry that she will get laid off. She got pink-slipped one year and the district somehow scraped together enough money to keep her on. *sigh*

Connolly-Ahern--The cuts are so frustrating!

Katy--your poor sister-in-law, it is exhausting to not know about a job
