Sunday Salon: vacation planning

Family and Life:
I spent a lot of this weekend planning vacations. This summer we're headed to Orcas Island, one of the San Juan Islands up in Puget Sound, Washington. We're rented a house with my best guy friend from high school and his family.

The huge planning was for spring break. My daughter's 5th grade class goes on a colonial trip to Philadelphia, DC, and Williamsburg at the end of May. She can't go so we're recreating parts of it for spring break. We've been to DC tons of times so we're doing Monticello. UVA, Williamsburg, Jamestown and Yorktown. I am hoping in amongst all that to see Aths from Reading on a Rainy Day...!

Work:
I did a really cool set of lessons this past week in an English 9 class called "Love of Literature" for my National Boards. We talked all about reading, what we like, don't like, how we choose books, and the students did "speed dating" with 5 to7 books. They were so excited about the books I'd brought and when they came into the library to get their free-reading books they were bursting with excitement!

Books and Reading:
I am still struggling with a book that I need to post about later this week for a blog tour, but read an amazing Wendelin Van Draanen book yesterday. Coming up on Tuesday I'l have an interview with author Anjali Banerjee and a give away of her latest book, Haunting Jasmine.

Wait.. are you coming to UVA? Because, that's an hour from my place! I could probably arrange a trip to UVA far easily, if my brother doesn't have any doc appointments around that time. Let me know. :)

Alexandra--speed dating with books is where I pass out at least one book per student and they get a minute to get to know the book then they pass them on and see a new book. I think the students liked it
