I thoroughly enjoyed the Literary Festival in my town last weekend. Chris Whittaker was particularly interesting; he was really honest about his life, the hardships, and how they led to where he is today as an author. I heard interesting talks/panels, bought some books that I am excited to read, and loved being around my fellow readers.

My in-person book group met to discuss Theo of Golden, which I really enjoyed. Turns out only three of the 10 liked it. The rest thought it was racist, predictable, trite, and hit them over the head with Christianity (I think, since I am not religious, I missed many of the Christian themes). Yikes! What did you all think of it? I took it at face value and appreciated the positivity and anonymity of Theo's deeds.

On Wednesday, our History Associates group held our annual Van Gelderen Lecture, which is given by an outstanding graduate student in the department. This year's lecture was super interesting: Russian and Chinese approaches to eugenics through forced labor and encarceration (as opposed to death in the US and Germany).

Yesterday, a few of us from our alumni association represented our association at a local Community History Day at the Presidio. It's always fun to be out in the community and talk with local alumni who get a kick out of looking at really old yearbooks (we have them going back to the early 1900s).
