I've been thinking a lot about the news revealing that Cesar Chavez abused young girls and women. Obviously, I am disgusted and so disappointed. I have several thoughts about it, which really resonate out to a wider issue.
  • I am glad schools, streets, and our California state holiday are being renamed. I understand the change to Farm Workers' Day, but why not Dolores Huerta Day? She co-founded the movement with Chavez. She coined the phrase "Si, se puede!" He is being "cancelled" because of his abuse against women, and at the same time, we are not honoring the women of the movement.
  • Despite his heinous and illegal behavior, the work he (and others) did is still vital and worth acknowledging. I think cancel culture plays out to authors and celebrities as well. We do not have to approve of the person's behavior, but that does not lessen the impact they made.
  • Cesar Chavez was cancelled and erased immediately. Why isn't the same thing happening to the President and other (rich, white) men who have done the same?
A friend passed away on Tuesday night. He had been very sick with cancer, and I am so glad that I had the chance to visit with him this past Saturday. Even when a death is not a complete surprise, it is still so tough.

I am someone who is big into supporting the groups to which I belong so I was really excited when the UC Santa Barbara Undergraduate History Club created sweatshirts so, of course, I jumped on the opportunity to get one. I earned my Masters degree in History at UCSB and am the President of the UCSB History Associates nonprofit.
