Sunday Salon: January 28, 2024

Deb Nance at Readerbuzz hosts The Sunday Salon.

It was a good week. I had a wonderfully long chat with my brother and a couple other friends who live out of town, bought a new frying pan (why is that so exciting?!), hosted an excellent event (more below), attended dance class, got a hair cut, ran a board meeting, went for a walk with friends (see the photo above, it was about 71 degrees and a wonderful day), and hosted a game night (more below). And worked full time. But somehow it all didn't seem too much or stressful. 😀

I think I have mentioned that I am the President of the University of California, Santa Barbara History Associates (we work to raise funds for graduate students and to connect the History department to the community). We do a speaker series and Monday the talk was a historical look at Israel/Palestine and the impacts on today. I booked it in June and when the war broke out most people tried to convince me to cancel the event or at least have a police presence for security purposes. It did not occur to me to cancel and I certainly wasn't going to create an issue by having police/security there (I felt that would suggest that we expected trouble and most attendees were probably going to be people of color, so no). Well the talk was a huge success with over 120 people in attendance and no conflict/issues. Afterward, the speaker told me that this is the first and only academic talk on the subject at the university (which totally surprised me).

Saturday was game night with women who all taught together back in the late 1990s and it was so much fun to be together again! We played Cards Against Humanity, which is always good for a laugh.

Why do I buy new books when I have plenty of good ones still unread on my shelves?! That's my TBR shelves in the photo. I know there aren't as many as some of you have, but I still have guilt that many of been on my shelves for quite some time.

Here is is the current state of my 2024 challenges
