Sunday Salon: July 16, 2023

Deb Nance at Readerbuzz hosts The Sunday Salon.

I stumbled upon an interesting Netflix film this week: "Tick, Tick... Boom." It's the story of Johnathan Larson, the creator of "Rent." It's really well done and I knew nothing of his story before watching. It takes place in the early 1990s so there are references to HIV, AIDS, dying friends, starving artists, those who "sell out," and more. And, there are tons of famous Broadway people who have cameos (Steven Sondheim, Bebe Neuwirth, Joel Grey, and more), which was really fun. And there's singing.

And the Wham! documentary was just right for me as well. Their music was my high school/college era so evokes strong memories for me. They seem like such great friends and guys through their time as a band; I enjoyed the documentary and singing along.

I went for a hike on Tuesday, my first in years. It was hot and a tough uphill, but I did it and that felt good.

Thursday and Friday I did errands associated with my upcoming holiday. I had my appointment to get my vaccinations for Zanzibar. It turns out my 1977 yellow fever vaccine is still good as is my 1997 Hepatitis A, and typhoid is a series of 4 pills so no vaccinations. I bought mosquito repellant (they LOVE me), and picked up other prescriptions for the trip like an just-in-case antibiotic, anti-nausea, etc.

This coming week is my birthday week and I decided to have a bunch of small get togethers with friends since everyone is on various schedules. I'll report on it all next Sunday.

Here is is the current state of my 2023 challenges. At this point, I am counting individual books for multiple categories in each challenge, but I'll replace them with other books throughout the year.
