Review: Flygirl (Sherri Smith) (original post 8/12/09)

Yesterday I finished Sherri Smith's novel FlyGirl and REALLY like it! It's about a light-skinned African-American woman who wants to fly planes for the US military during WWII. This book has it all: laughs, tears (for me and the characters), family, race, friendship, and history. There is an Afterword that tells the reader about which parts were historically accurate.

These women were amazing to overcome gender barriers (and in the main character's case, race barriers) in the south and in the US in general. They took on dangerous missions, usually the ones the army didn't want to "waste" men on!
