I am just about to begin Fasting, Feasting by Anita Desai, which was recommended on a number of blogs

"On the veranda overlooking the garden, the drive and the gate, they sit together on the creaking sofa-swing, suspended from its iron frame, dangling their legs so that the slippers on their feet hang loose."

Who are these two people? Where are they living? I get the feeling that they are a bit nervous, so why is that? I am ready to begin....
